Leadership and Management in Engineering

Leadership and Management in Engineering, a publication of the Committee on Professional Practice, examines contemporary issues and principles of leadership and management. The focus is on understanding and application of these principles through variety of venues within the publication, including news, brief and concise leadership and management "nuggets," and short articles of interest to practicing professionals in a variety of roles and industry segments. The focus includes, but is not limited to, individuals and public and/or private entities, small and large projects, and organizations. Areas of interest are leadership; teamwork; communications; team building; decision making; partnering; project management; mentoring; coaching; diversity; department, branch, and office management; professional practice and development; budgeting; financial management; productivity management, including motivational theory, incentives, and feedback techniques, and tools; globalization; networking; change management; role and involvement in political process; local, state, and national level legislative and regulatory issues; and economic and environmental sustainability.

The construction industry has a reputation of being one of the most unsafe industries because of its high rates of injuries and fatalities. To improve safety performance, some construction companies have implemented innovative safety management programs. This paper reviews programs implemented by five construction companies in the United States, Australia, and Hong Kong and reviews the objectives, implementation strategies, and lessons learned from each. 2010- 2011 Best Feature Article Award
 
Congratulations to Zhigang Shen and Wayne Jensen, authors of the 2010–2011 Best Feature Article in Leadership and Management in Engineering, “Civil Engineers as Master Builders and the Professionalization of Construction,” which appeared in the April 2011 issue. The paper discusses the concept of master builder featured in ASCE’s Vision 2025 and describes its implications in terms of current practices and business models in the architect, engineer, and contractor (AEC) community, the bodies of knowledge published by both ASCE and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and the professionalization of civil engineering and construction management.
