Geomorphically Based Criteria for Channel Design

Abstract
Remediation of mine tailings from the channel and adjacent floodplain of 5 miles of Silver Bow Creek near Butte, Montana will require complete excavation and reconstruction of the floodplain and channel. Specific project objectives include reconstruction of a channel and streambanks which provide for dynamic stability through deformable streambanks while working within the constraints imposed by existing infrastructure. Specific design criteria were developed to achieve vertical stability, dynamic lateral stability, and reduced potential for channel avulsion. Based on estimated hydrology and sediment supply, criteria were established to facilitate a design process which begins with ensuring sediment continuity through channel grade and cross-section geometry and subsequently develops planform and floodplain characteristics.
