Parking Garage Security and Lighting
Publication: AEI 2008: Building Integration Solutions
Abstract
Historically, parking structures are perceived to be dark and dangerous places. Proper design of the passive security features within a garage, combined with appropriate active security measures, can create a welcoming, safe, and secure space. With features that deter criminal activity and promote safety, a garage will be well- received by the user, the community, and the owner. An explanation of security considerations for a parking garage is presented herein, including a discussion of garage lighting. Other security considerations include openness, visibility, access control, perimeter control, and electronic security measures (e.g. CCTV, intercoms, etc.). Active security, primarily consisting of manned patrolling, is also briefly discussed.
