An Assessment of Benefits of Using BIM on an Infrastructure Project

Publication: International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure 2017

Abstract

This paper reports on the application of BIM in a major infrastructure project in Scotland. The €600M M8/M73/M74 motorway improvements project on the outskirts of Glasgow is a major transport infrastructure scheme. The main contractors, Ferrovials of Spain, and its partners are collectively responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of the project on behalf of the Scottish Roads Partnership. Despite no contractual obligations, the main contractor decided to utilize BIM technologies and processes in parallel with traditional CAD based approach on a section of the project with a view to assessing the relative benefits and challenges between the two approaches. The main objective behind this comparison exercise was for them to establish the benefits and challenges of using BIM on their future infrastructure projects. This paper presents some key results to generate ideas for wider adoption of BIM on major infrastructure projects. Some of the results suggest a significant increase in value creation and savings by utilizing BIM technologies in the project by streamlining the information exchange between stakeholders through the use of BIM-driven common data exchange platforms. As the paper will show, there are certain challenges that also need to be borne in mind when implementing BIM-based design and construction of major transport and infrastructure projects. A future endeavour is to cross-compare the results in this study to the Ohio River Bridge project—a major infrastructure in the United States and lay the foundation for the adoption of BIM in infrastructure projects.
