Accurate Mapping of Underground Utilities: An Information Fusion Approach Based on Dempster-Shafer Theory

Abstract

Accurate mapping of buried utilities is critical to managing massive urban underground infrastructure and preventing utility incidents. Using a single sensing system such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) is usually inadequate to achieve this goal. This paper presents an information fusion approach that integrates both sensing and non-sensing data based on Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory, leading to improved accuracy and confidence in utility mapping. The GPR, utility existing records, and utility specifications are three data sources which provide evidence for the state of underground utilities. The proposed method is implemented in two steps: utility presence confirmation and utility location estimation. The detection results are fused at the decision-making level and the trust level of the fused results is also assessed. A simulation study is conducted to validate the efficacy of the method. The results suggest that the integration of sensing and non-sensing data significantly reduces the error of estimated location and enhance the confidence of the results. It proves that non-sensing data can provide valuable information for spatial reasoning and should not be ignored.
